BEAVERCREEK, Ohio – One Dayton resident is continuing to make a difference in the lives of children halfway around the world.

Sjanneke Baker, a 2009 alumna of Ohio University, was an intern for The Empower Campaign from 2008 to 2009, and is now an EDUCATE Foundation Board Member. The Empower Campaign, based in Athens, Ohio, is a non-profit organization dedicated to educating AIDS orphans and vulnerable children in Uganda, Africa, and is a project of the EDUCATE Foundation, a 501 (c) 3 federally recognized non-profit.

Baker, a Worthington Schools Intervention Specialist, will represent Empower and sell jewelry at the Catholic Relief Services’ Fair Trade Work of Human Hands Sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Dec. 5, 2009. The sale, formerly known as the International Artisan Market, will be held at Bergamo, 4400 Shakertown Rd. in Beavercreek. The event is sponsored by Weavers of Justice, in partnership with SERRV and Catholic Relief Services. In addition to craft sales, singers from Burundi and Rwandan, Mexicano and Caribbean dance troupes will perform.

Empower jewelry is handcrafted from recycled paper and has been purchased from women’s cooperatives in Uganda at a fair-trade price. The proceeds from jewelry sales are used to build schools and provide orphans and vulnerable children in Uganda with educational opportunities.
